Entry: the clouds in your eyes: down your face they pour Monday, March 24, 2008

"Did you know," queries a CityRail poster, one morning at Roseville, waiting for a train that is probably not coming, "did you know that a sick passenger at Berowra can affect trains to Blacktown?"

"Outrageous!" the intended target (a commuter) is supposed to think. "Those two places are very far apart!"

A quick glance at the CityRail network map will reveal that the two stations are on a connected line, the yellow North Shore/Western line, in spite of their considerable distance. Still, the poster implies that, under the new Rail Clearways scheme, such an injustice will not occur.

One quick glance at the Rail Clearways map later, and an addendum should be added to the poster:
"Did you know that a sick passenger at Berowra can affect trains to Blacktown?
Well, under Rail Clearways, that will still happen! In fact, it will now also affect trains to Epping, Strathfield, and the new Epping-Chatswood line! Why? Because Rail Clearways plans to merge the Northern, North Shore and Western Lines (both branches) into one of the five 'clearways'. That's everything north (and just south) of the Parramatta River, and more than a third of CityRail's total metropolitan mileage!"

But I guess then the poster would be too big.

relax man, by the time the plan is implimented, it will be redundant. do you know how long it took them to start building the Epping-chatswood line via Macquarie? Do you have any idea when it's supposed to have been finished by, and any idea when it actually will? Exactly, case in point. Fear not, I'm sure the level of disservice will continue in a business as usual fashion.

Dude... that line is almost finished. It's going to open in like five months.

And the point is, Rail Clearways is a LIE. And once again no-one gives a shit about the North Shore.

I'm not really sure I can see how there are any real changes on that map at all. It seems to me like they just merged a bunch of express and non-express lanes and said 'Now It's Different!!'. It's pretty subtle for a major overhaul.

But, as Keevers points out, the NSW government has a track record of failing to deliver on things, so we can only hope that in this case, they continue to live up to their high standards of professionalism.

Meh, it works when I need it about 99.9% of the time. The last 0.1% is a damn nightmare and cityrail should die for it as we still pay if they screw up.

Not really when you consider you are giving them money to make you wait for hours and miss a significant portion of whatever you were going to. May not be bad for one person but when you start multiplying by thousands the punishment shoots up to capital quite quickly. Death penalty for public transport screw ups! We could even make a watchable reality TV show from it :)

You know, what you say brings up memories of Frontline.
